Naples
Naples (Italian: Napoli) is a city in
Italy, and capital of the Campania region and the Province
of Naples. The city itself has a population of
984,242
(as of 2005),
and is surrounded by a much larger metropolitan region (the second largest in Italy)
with a total population of approximately 4.2 million.
Naples is a very ancient city, dating back to the 7th or 6th century BC, having been originally
founded by Greeks from the nearby Greek colony of Cuma. The original name of the city was "Neapolis"
meaning "new city"! The inhabitants of Naples are still today known as
Neapolitans (Italian: Napoletani).
